First Time Hydrafacials + Dermaplaning? What to Expect

North Mountain, Phoenix, Arizona

I hear it all the time: you want smoother skin and that clean glow, but you’re nervous about trying something new. That’s normal. A lot of people tell me they felt comfortable quickly because my space is clean, I explain what I’m doing, and my team is friendly and professional. A Hydrafacial + dermaplaning appointment is straightforward. Plan for about 60 minutes, minimal discomfort, and skin that looks smoother and more radiant right away when it’s done properly.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly how to prep, what you’ll feel during each step, and how to take care of your results in Phoenix’s dry heat and strong sun, especially if you’re active outdoors.
Your 7-day prep plan for a Hydrafacial + dermaplaning facial
If you want that “clear and radiant” look people talk about after facials with me, prep matters. Nothing complicated, just a few smart pauses so your skin isn’t irritated before we start.
- Pause retinoids and strong exfoliants: I generally recommend stopping retinol, tretinoin, strong acids, and aggressive scrubs 3 to 7 days before your appointment. If you’re sensitive, lean closer to 7.
- Skip waxing or depilatory creams on your face: Dermaplaning already removes peach fuzz and dead skin. Doubling up can leave you extra reactive.
- Avoid recent aggressive treatments: If you’ve had a recent chemical peel, laser, or aggressive resurfacing, let me know before you book so we can time it safely.
- Come with clean skin if you can: No heavy makeup is best. If you do arrive with makeup, don’t worry. I’ll cleanse you thoroughly.
Quick note for North Mountain locals: If you’re hiking or spending a lot of time outside in Phoenix sun, tell me. I’ll focus your aftercare around sun sensitivity so you don’t lose your glow to dryness or irritation.
Inside the 60-minute Hydrafacial + dermaplaning session, step by step
When you arrive at my North Mountain studio near E Northern Ave and 19th St, I’ll take a minute to look at your skin with you and talk through your goals. If you’re here for age management or hyperpigmentation, this combination is one of my favorite “fast refresh” options because it smooths first, then hydrates and brightens.
1) Cleanse and quick skin check
I start by cleansing so we’re working on a clean canvas. This is also where I’ll ask about any recent peels, laser, breakouts, or new products. If anything looks too inflamed or compromised, I’ll tell you honestly and we’ll reschedule or adjust the plan.
2) Dermaplaning (the smoothing step)
Dermaplaning is a gentle, controlled “scraping” sensation. It’s not painful, and most people are surprised by how light it feels. I’m removing vellus hair (peach fuzz) and dead skin so your face looks smoother and your products sit better. If you’re nervous, tell me. I’ll talk you through it and keep checking in.
“They explained each step of the procedure, which gave me a lot of confidence and peace of mind.”

3) Hydrafacial: cleanse, extract, and infuse hydration
Then we move into the Hydrafacial portion. You’ll feel a light suction and glide across the skin. It tends to feel refreshing, not intense. The flow is simple: I cleanse again, do gentle extraction with suction (no harsh squeezing), and then infuse hydrators and brightening support so your skin looks plumper and more even.
What you should feel: gentle scraping during dermaplaning, then a cool, smooth glide with light suction during the Hydrafacial. If anything stings or feels sharp, I want you to tell me right away so I can adjust.
4) Finish and quick post-care talk
I’ll finish with calming hydration and SPF guidance. People often tell me their skin feels “fresh, hydrated, and much more radiant” when they leave. If you’re heading back to work, driving home to Glendale, or meeting friends in Scottsdale, you can usually do that right away.
After your hydrafacial: redness, sun sensitivity, and how to keep the glow in Phoenix
Most people have little to no downtime. You might see mild redness that fades within a few hours, and your skin will be more sun-sensitive for about 48 to 72 hours. In Phoenix, that matters. Dry heat plus strong sun can take a great facial result and turn it into tight, irritated skin if you don’t protect it.
- SPF is non-negotiable: Use broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. Reapply if you’re outside.
- Skip heat and heavy sweating for 24 to 48 hours: That means no sauna and try not to plan a tough outdoor hike the same day.
- Hold retinol and exfoliants for 3 to 7 days: Let your skin enjoy the smoothness before you bring actives back in.
- Keep it gentle: Mild cleanser, hydrating moisturizer, and a simple routine for a few days.
For rebooking, many people like a monthly rhythm, especially if you’re targeting hyperpigmentation or early signs of aging. If you’re mixing in acne treatment, microneedling, or other services, I’ll help you space things so your skin stays calm.
When to reschedule dermaplaning, and what I want you to tell me upfront
I’m big on great results, but I’m even bigger on doing things at the right time. Please reschedule if you have active inflamed cystic acne, open wounds, a fresh sunburn, recent facial surgery, or you just had aggressive resurfacing.
And tell me if you’re using prescription acne products, you recently had laser work, or you’re peeling. This isn’t you being “high maintenance.” It’s how we keep your skin happy so you leave glowing instead of irritated.
Insider tip: If your skin is reactive, book your Hydrafacial + dermaplaning a few days before a big event, not the night before. That gives any mild redness time to fade and lets the hydration really show.
My best first-timer tips (especially if you searched “facials near me” in North Mountain)
If you’re comparing a “facial spa near me” and you’re stuck, here’s what I’d want you to know before your first visit with me. I take my time and I explain what I’m doing step by step, because that’s what helps people relax. I also hear a lot of the same pattern: first visit turns into a monthly habit because people love how clean, hydrated, and soft their skin looks afterward.
I’m in North Mountain, and many of my clients come in from Phoenix, Glendale, Paradise Valley, Scottsdale, Tempe, and Peoria. If you’re commuting via I-17 or SR-51, this is an easy stop to fit into your week.
