CO2 laser aftercare, face + body: what to do the first 2 weeks

North Mountain, Phoenix, Arizona | CO2 Fractional Laser starting at $800

The most important rule after CO2 laser is simple: keep the treated skin clean and moist. I want you gently cleansing with lukewarm water, applying a thin layer of prescribed ointment or plain petrolatum every few hours while you’re awake, staying out of the Phoenix sun, and leaving the skin alone, no picking. For the first 48 to 72 hours, skip makeup and strenuous exercise so you protect the fresh new skin that’s trying to form.
First 24–48 hours after fractional CO2 laser: calm it down, keep it protected
Right after fractional CO2 laser, your skin usually looks red and feels hot, tight, or tender. That’s expected. What helps most is a steady, simple routine that avoids friction and heat.
Quick checklist (first 2 days): Cleanse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, apply a thin layer of ointment or petrolatum often, and stay out of sun and heat.
Cleansing and moisture, the part most people overthink
I generally recommend a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water. Use clean hands, not a washcloth or cleansing brush. Pat dry. Then apply a thin layer of the ointment you were told to use, or plain petrolatum if that’s your plan. Reapply every few hours while awake so the surface does not dry out and crack.
Makeup, heat, and sweating rules in Phoenix
For at least 48 to 72 hours, keep makeup off the treated area. I also want you to avoid anything that makes you flush or sweat hard. In North Mountain, Phoenix heat can turn a simple commute into a sweaty situation. Sweat tends to sting and irritate freshly treated skin, and rubbing it away can cause extra inflammation. If you have to be out, plan shade, wear a wide-brim hat, and keep your face dry with gentle blotting, not wiping.
- No strenuous exercise, heavy sweating, saunas, steam rooms, or hot yoga.
- No pools, hot tubs, lakes, or soaking baths.
- No exfoliating tools, scrubs, alcohol toners, retinoids, or acids.
Days 3–7: peeling and scabbing are normal, picking is the mistake that causes problems
Around day 3, many people move from “hot and red” to “dry, tight, and flaking.” Some areas can form tiny scabs. This is the stage where patience pays off. If you pick, you can slow healing and increase the chance of irritation and uneven color.
If it’s flaking: add moisture and let it shed on its own. Don’t scrub it off, even if it’s tempting.
Sun is the big one, especially for Phoenix and North Mountain
Strict sun avoidance matters until the skin is fully re-epithelialized, meaning it has formed a smooth new surface. Phoenix sun and dry heat are intense. Even short outdoor time can trigger extra redness and dark marks while you’re healing. I recommend physical barriers first, hats, sunglasses, and staying in shade. Once you’re healed enough for sunscreen, use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily and keep using physical barriers when you can.
Workouts and weekend hikes (yes, even Piestewa Peak)
If you love getting outside, I get it. But sweat, heat, and friction are a rough combo for healing skin. I usually recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, pools, saunas, and heavy sweating for 7 to 14 days depending on the area treated and how your skin is healing. If you’re planning a weekend hike near Piestewa Peak, push it out or keep it very light, early, and shaded, and avoid anything that makes you drip sweat.
Products that protect your CO2 laser result (and the ones to pause for 3–6 weeks)
I keep product advice boring on purpose after resurfacing. Your skin does best with fewer steps and zero irritation.
Stick with these basics
- Gentle, fragrance-free cleanser
- Prescribed ointment or plain petrolatum (thin layer, reapplied often early on)
- Fragrance-free moisturizer once your skin is calming down
Pause these until I clear you (often 3–6 weeks)
Retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, alcohol-based toners, and strong “active” products can burn and inflame healing skin.
If you’re already doing microneedling, a hydrafacial, dermaplaning, or an acne treatment routine, pause it and let’s restart step-by-step when your skin is ready.
And if you’re also searching for facials near me or a facial spa near me, I’m always happy to map out a calm maintenance plan after you heal so your results keep improving without setbacks.
Week 2 (and weeks 2–4): returning to normal without setting yourself back
By week 2, many people feel “mostly fine, ” but the skin can still be sensitive and reactive. This is where I see people get impatient and jump back into strong skincare or outdoor activities too quickly.
If your skin is closed, smooth, and no longer peeling, you can usually start reintroducing a simple moisturizer and, once appropriate, a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every day. Makeup often comes back gradually after the initial 48 to 72 hours, but I still prefer you wait until the surface is calm and not flaking so you’re not rubbing product into fragile areas.
Outdoor time is fine if you’re protected. In Phoenix, that means planning around peak heat, choosing shade, and using physical barriers. If you’re driving around North Mountain near E Northern Ave and 19th St, keep the sun off your face and body in the car too.
When to reach out to me after CO2 laser resurfacing (and when it’s urgent)
I take aftercare seriously because it protects your result and your comfort. A lot of our regulars come back because I explain each step clearly and stay present if something feels off. That calm, guided approach matters even more with resurfacing.
“They explained each step of the procedure, which gave me a lot of confidence and peace of mind.”
one of our regulars
Reach out quickly if you notice any of these
- Increasing pain that isn’t settling
- Spreading redness, worsening swelling, or a hot, expanding area
- Fever, heavy drainage, or signs that look like infection
One more important note. If you have a history of cold sores, ask about antivirals before the procedure. It’s a small step that can prevent a big annoyance.
